Holding Absence – Gravity (Review)

One of Cardiff’s most coveted treasures, post-hardcore outfit Holding Absence have rightfully earned and solidified their position not only as one of South Wales’ true alternative heavy-weights but as key figures of the grassroots alternative music scene throughout the UK and beyond. Following the release of their eponymous debut album through Sharptone Records and a rammed out performance at Scala in London, the group return in 2020 with a refined sound and more energy than ever in the form of Gravity, the first instalment of a two-track 7 inch, its counterpart, Birdcage to follow.

Gravity wastes no time in transporting the listener directly into Holding Absence‘s renowned soundscape; profound drum beats encapsulate and demand attention while a haunting backdrop sets the stage for desperation and concern. These intense instrumental elements subside and make way for Lucas Woodland to take centre stage with his celestial tone: “I look to you, like a moth to candlelight”. As the verse progresses we begin to truly empathise and connect with feelings of despair and helplessness as Woodland sets the scene with powerful imagery, combined with a rising level of ferocity behind him, a formula that Holding Absence have proven time and time again to be adept at utilising and a precedence that says we can expect a powerful and anthemic chorus imminently.

The group do not disappoint. Woodland‘s huge vocal notes coast across waves of euphoric atmosphere, established through the methodically synergised talents of guitarist Scott Carey, bassist James Joseph and drummer Ashley Green working in unison and at matched levels of energy and commitment to their craft.

This exhilarating and impassioned single is reminiscent of the band’s earlier commercially focused releases, such as Like A Shadow and Monochrome. Sonically, Gravity sits aside from these previous releases however and the influence of renowned, grammy-nominated producer Romesh Dodangoda (Bring Me The Horizon, Kids In Glass Houses, Bullet For My Valentine, Funeral for a Friend) are notably present as Gravity gives us a taste of a more mature, yet retentively authentic Holding Absence.

Gravity is a welcome treat during such uncertain times, particularly as its release comes in the midst of a nation-wide lockdown following the declaration of a viral pandemic. The song reminds us to reach out to others, to maintain focus and to understand that while one might find it difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s crucial to preserve hope at all times and to remember that you are not alone. Musically, it allows us to safely predict that 2020, while off to a rocky start, is going to be an incredible year for Holding Absence and their fans.
