Foxxglove – City (Review)

Foxxglove is Cardiff’s Ffion Murray and while her hardworking gig ethic has built her a loyal and reliable audience locally, her debut single City serves to push her unique spin on dark pop to a wider crowd.

City begins abruptly, an eerie isolated guitar manoeuvres gently behind Foxxglove‘s serious vocal tone and equitable lyrics. From the off Foxxglove paints a clear picture of a dark cityscape, with nuances of emotion derived from this authentic environment; lights, coffee shops, cigarette smoke, cars, crowds. These words, tempered with the subtle, ghostlike instrumental refrains set a powerful imagery.

The chorus kicks in and we’re treated to a rush of emotion as the soundscape elevates. Pad synths enhance Foxxglove‘s vocal shift into a more intense and impassioned setting and we begin to truly empathise and immerse ourselves within the story she is presenting.

The song is haunting and authentic, existing within a state of finely polished rawness that’s reminiscent of Afterglow era Blackbear, or 2013-era NYLO. City is an outstanding introduction to Foxxglove and her alternative spin on the pop genre and sets an impressive standard with high anticipation for her next release.

Foxxglove would appeal to fans of Blackbear, NYLO, Billie Eilish, ZAND.
